Smoothing out the Bumpy Road

Posted by SuburbanGirl at 07:47 AM on August 5, 2005.

Things have been a bit hectic for the past week.  This will probably be my last update until I come back from California.  Oh yes, the wedding is near...we'll be off to Napa Valley on the 7th.  I thought I was going to be short a bridesmaid, but it all worked out.  Ryan had been fainting for no apparent reason, so she was in and out of the hospital for a a couple of weeks.  They didn't know what was going on, but they finally figured out it was bradycardia caused by an underlying heart condition.  No worries, for now it doesn't require any treatment.  She's feeling well enough to still participate in the wedding.  James was understandably freaked out.  He has a ton of vacation time built up so he's going to take about six week off and they're coming to Napa on the 7th too so they can spend some quality time together as a family.

Speaking of family, my little rugrats will be with the grandparents this week, and they're going to fly out with them on the 11th.  I'm really excited, I have no idea why.  I already know the rest of my life will be spent with him...all of this is just for show.

I just realize that I'm happy.  Really, really happy...and that's a new feeling for me, but I like it.  It does not suck.

I'm Back

Posted by SuburbanGirl at 11:44 AM on August 19, 2005.

Well, officially we've been back since Sunday, but we've been in our own little world since then.  Jet lag has been kicking our asses.  The wedding was fantasic...the days leading up to it were even better.  Scott was very very appreciative of my little surprise.  He thoroughly enjoyed the quality time.  We always though we spent a lot of time together, but having that whole week without the kids made us realize how busy we actually are most of the time.  We see each other a lot, but we weren't really getting any time for us.

The wedding was really beautiful.  It turned out exactly how I wanted it to.  I don't know the name of the band we had, but they were frickin awesome.  Those dudes rocked.  I wasn't expecting everyone to show up but they did.  It was like every frickin' Nguyen in the US was there...according to Vietnamese legend we're all related anyway.  Hell, we're supposedly descended from a frickin' dragon.

Ryan and James flew out with us and stayed at a Bed & Breakfast for the week.  They wanted to do their little family time thing.  James is taking about three weeks off (this dude had a ridiculous amount of vacation time) just to be around the house in case Ryan has anymore problems.  She's a little sluggish but she's feeling a lot better...she had no problem with our little mile high club experiment on the plane.

It was amazing and fun, but I'm glad it's over.  As great a time as we had at the vineyard, it's good to be back home in my own bed.

Whatever Happened to Nepotism?

Posted by SuburbanGirl at 12:09 PM on August 23, 2005.

You would think being married to a producer would afford you perk or two...a freebie part thrown your way once in a while, but I guess it doesn't work that way.  Not for Ashley Scott anyway.  I mean sure, Anthony Rhulen is fairly new to the industry himself, but The Butterfly Effect was fairly successful...as was O.  So somebody please tell me why her first real starring role (or what looks like one) is in a movie directed by Mekhi Phifer.  It's a comedy called Easier, Softer Way and it also stars Danny Masterson (yeah, that guy).

The title is about all I know about this movie at this point, but seeing as Mekhi Phifer attended the Bokeem Woodbine school of horrid acting...it doesn't bode good news, that's for sure.  I'll try to reserve judgement for the actual viewing though.  I've had my eye on her for a while...since her brief appearance as Gigolo Jane is AI really.

She's not the greatest actress in the world (not yet anyway).  She's fairly average in her talent...but it's potential I see.  She has this uncanny ability to emote through her eyes.  That's something I see in very few actresses, and it makes their performance more oft than not.  It's that extra something that kicks you in the ass and makes you pay attention.   Few people know who Ashley Scott is by name, but everyone remembers Gigolo Jane.  She stole an entire film in about 10 seconds of screen time...that is a woman who has something special.

It's slow going, but I really think there's more in store for her in Hollywood.
